The Group Mind of Software Development, Software Support and Google/Bing @Innovye #SWMM5 #EPANET

This idea that individuals prioritise where information is located has led some researchers topropose that digital devices and the internet have become a form of transactive memory. This idea, which dates back to the 1980s, refers to a group memory that is superior to that of any individual.
According to this account, individuals can collectively store and distribute information using a shared store of knowledge. This store of knowledge means that individuals can access details that they may not know themselves by knowing that another individual remembers it, thus enhancing what information is available to them by communicating with other people. In the same way, individuals develop a transactive memory with the internet and rely on it for information by focusing on where details are located rather than the details themselves.
More recent research has extended this line of work and found that saving information on a computer not only changes how our brains interact with it, but also makes it easier to learn new information. In a study published last year, the participants were presented with two files that each contained a list of words. They were asked to memorise both lists. Half of the participants were asked to save the first file before moving on to the next list, while the others had to close it without saving.

Amy’s publications related to her work include a recent Feature article in Environmental Science and Technology.

Among her other achievements, Amy is a national 2010 Udall Scholar, a 2011 ARCS (Achievement Rewards for College Scientists) Scholar, a former NSF IGERT Fellow, and a current EPA STAR Graduate Research Fellow. She received a B.S. in Bioinformatics (summa cum laude) from the University of Pittsburgh in 2011.

This prestigious annual award recognizes a student whose research contributes to the knowledge pool in the area of Computational Hydraulics & Hydrology. Selection is based on original, innovative research of publishable quality and other factors. Both Master's and Ph.D. students are eligible.

Administered by AAEES and co-sponsored by Innovyze, the award consists of cash honoraria of $1,500 for the student and $500 for the major faculty advisor. A $500 travel allotment is also provided to the student recipient to attend the AAEES Excellence in Environmental Engineering and Science Awards Luncheon. The award selection is administered jointly by a committee consisting of equal members of AAEES and the Association of Environmental Engineering and Science Professors (AEESP).

Boulos Joins 12 Other Prominent Engineers in Receiving ASCE’s Highest Honor

Dr. Boulos is one of only 637 engineers in ASCE’s 163-year history to receive this prestigious distinction. Dr. Boulos was specifically recognized for his eminence as a foremost global expert in the theory and practice of computational hydraulics simulation technology for water/wastewater infrastructures. Distinguished Membership is the highest honor ASCE can bestow. The total number of Distinguished Members elected in any year typically does not exceed one for every 7,500 members.

“While I am truly honored and humbled by this momentous acknowledgement from my ASCE peers, it must be shared with my mentors and colleagues whose inspiration and support played a significant part in making my achievements possible,” Dr. Boulos said. “It’s wonderful to know that my contributions to water and wastewater infrastructure engineering — such a vital aspect of human life — are being recognized in this exceptional way.”

One of the world’s foremost experts on water resources and navigation engineering, Dr. Boulos is the author of nine authoritative books and more than 200 technical articles on issues critical to the water and wastewater industry. He has received a range of honors from national and international scientific and engineering societies, governments, universities and NGOs, including notable technical awards for excellence in scholarship from ASCE, the American Water Works Association (AWWA) and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA).

Dr. Boulos is a recipient of the U.S. Ellis Island Medal of Honor, one of America’s highest accolades; the Pride of Heritage Award from the Lebanese American Foundation; and the Lebanese American University Alumni of the Year Award. He was inducted into the University of Kentucky College of Engineering Hall of Distinction, the highest honor the university bestows on its alumni. Dr. Boulos was also awarded Honorary Diplomate status by the American Academy of Water Resources Engineers (AAWRE) as well as Distinguished Diplomate status in Navigation Engineering (Dist. D.NE) by the Academy of Coastal, Ocean, Port & Navigation Engineers (ACOPNE), the top honors for both academies. He is a Diplomate (by Eminence) of the American Academy of Environmental Engineers and Scientists (AAEES) and was elected to the National Academy of Engineering (NAE), one of the highest professional distinctions accorded to an engineer.

New Software Lets Stormwater Management Professionals Determine Optimal BMP Combinations at Various Watershed Scales Based on Cost and Effectiveness

Designed in response to the needs of watershed and stormwater engineering professionals, this power tool lets users develop, evaluate, and select optimal best management practice (BMP) combinations at various watershed scales on the basis of cost and effectiveness. It can be effectively used to evaluate complex decisions about green infrastructure selection and placement, performance, and costs for meeting desired flow and water quality targets.

InfoSWMM Sustain is a comprehensive geocentric decision support system created to facilitate optimal selection and placement of BMPs and low impact development (LID) techniques at strategic locations in urban watersheds. Dr. Boulos is one of the world’s foremost experts on water resources and navigation engineering and the author of nine authoritative books and more than 200 technical articles on issues critical to the water and wastewater industry. He has received numerous honors from national and international scientific and engineering societies, governments, universities, and NGOs, including technical awards for excellence in scholarship from the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), the American Water Works Association and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. He was recognized with the U.S. Ellis Island Medal of Honor, one of America’s highest accolades; the Pride of Heritage Award from the Lebanese American Foundation; and the Lebanese American University Alumni of the Year Award. InfoSWMM Sustain is a comprehensive geocentric decision support system created to facilitate optimal selection and placement of BMPs and low impact development (LID) techniques at strategic locations in urban watersheds. By seamlessly integrating ArcGIS 10.x with SWMM 5.1, InfoSWMM Sustain greatly expands on the USEPA SUSTAIN software to provide critically needed support to watershed practitioners at all levels in developing stormwater management evaluations and cost optimizations to meet their program needs. The software can automatically import any SWMM5.1, InfoSWMM or InfoWorks ICM model, then evaluate numerous potential combinations of BMPs to determine the optimal combination to meet specified objectives such as runoff volume or pollutant loading reductions. Both kinematic wave and full dynamic wave flow routing models are fully supported.
